How Do I Fix a Cavity?

At some point, most of us will develop a cavity. After all, only around 2% of the population is immune to dental caries. Once you develop decay, you may be wondering: How do I fix a cavity? Fortunately, there are a number of comfortable and minimally invasive treatment options to return your tooth to full function and health. By understanding the causes and symptoms of decay, you can help your smile stay healthy and beautiful.

What Causes Tooth Decay?

Why do we develop cavities? A cavity forms when bacteria gains access to the sensitive layers of dentin beneath your outer enamel. This can happen when bacteria break down sugars and other food particles caught between teeth, coating the teeth in plaque in the process. In addition, injury to the tooth, in the form of a crack or chip, can expose the dentin below the enamel.

What are the Warning Signs?

People with decay may report tooth sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures in the early stages. As the cavity progresses and continues to spread, the patient may encounter a full-on toothache. Without addressing the problem, the bacteria may reach the inner pulp below the dentin and cause an infection or abscess. At this stage, the tooth will require a root canal to prevent the spread of infection to surrounding teeth.

How Do I Treat a Cavity?

In most cases, we will treat the issue with a simple dental filling. Made from a metal-free composite material, so the filling looks natural and blends with the surrounding structure. If you have any questions or would like to schedule a consultation, then contact our office today.
