No! Don’t Take My Tooth!

Today there are a myriad of dental treatments for all problems imaginable, but regardless, sometimes you may still require a tooth extraction. Some people would rather opt for an extraction because it seems easier and cheaper than having a root canal or other treatment. Then there are those that do not want to lose their tooth, but may have little choice in the matter. Learn why you may need an extraction before you say “No, don’t take my tooth!”

Some Teeth Just Need to be Pulled

There are times when teeth need to be pulled for health reasons, or other reasons. Some of these reasons include:

Periodontal Disease: The severe stages of periodontal disease can cause tooth loss. However, if you haven’t lost your teeth yet, but are suffering from periodontal disease and your surrounding gum tissue has receded, your periodontal ligaments are diseased and can no longer hold your teeth in place, your bone is diseased, and your teeth are loose, there is no other treatment option but to extract your teeth.

Infection: There are many treatment options available for damaged, broken, chipped, cracked, or decayed teeth, but if the pulp of your tooth becomes infected due to one of these issues, and the infection cannot be controlled the tooth will need to be extracted. Also, if the infection in your tooth would compromise your health for any reason the tooth will also need to be extracted.

Wisdom teeth/crowded teeth: Impacted wisdom teeth, wisdom teeth that do not have enough room to erupt, or wisdom teeth that are coming in crooked will be removed due to the risk of infection and crowding. Other teeth may need to be extracted also to make room for a patient who needs braces.
